The Canadian government is facing acute labour shortages across the country. As a result it is seeking to bring newcomers to provide much-needed skills and labour.

On the 24th of May Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the International Mobility Program Plus (IMP+), a new work permit option for Quebec-selected permanent residence candidates, is open for applications.

With the IMP+ work permit, an applicant who has been selected for permanent residence by Quebec, but who currently lives elsewhere, will be able to move to the province and begin working and getting settled sooner.

Those approved will receive a 3-year province-restricted open work permit, allowing them to work for most employers in Quebec. Study permits and open work permits will continue to be available to accompanying family members through existing measures.

There is a cap of 14,700 for the entire year of 2022. This limit will drop to 7,350 in 2023.
